Last issue, Godot gave advice on How to Post Without Wyrming. This issue, Juunin has taken one of Godot's examples - a bar fight where the PC is running for the door to escape - and shows how the player can write a lengthy response without wyrming.
Here's what a less experienced player might write:
Dorf ran for the door as the fight broke out in the bar.
A more experienced player might take better advantage of the situation:
Dorf attempted to duck quickly under a table as chaos broke out around him. Why are people always trying to smash up perfectly good bars? he thought. All I said was that the ale tasted a little watery... How was I supposed to know that the bartender would try to attack me over such an offhand comment? Dorf gave a mental headshake of regret.
He was always getting himself into trouble, like that time he'd called that prince's wife "Harlot" when her name was "Harlace". She was pretty, that one, with long blonde tresses and more curves than a pear. It was a simple mistake, really, one which anyone could have made, but he'd been forced to flee for his very life as the prince's bodyguards chased him out of Tegn.
And then there was that time in Tahnn when he'd been accused of stealing a camel. At least everyone had been willing to talk about that one... well, at least until he'd accidentally spilled that drink on the Ss'tiss guard captain. Then things had taken a turn for the worse. But that wasn't his fault either - there'd been a scorpion on his arm at the time. What was he supposed to have done, stayed calm? Scorpion stings hurt! And now this... Another village he'd be unwelcome to return to. It was a true pity...
Dorf had no interest in staying for the fight. He was a lover, not a fighter. Well, truth be told he wasn't much of a lover either, but he preferred loving to fighting. That much, at least, was true.
The middle-aged, balding scoundrel looked towards the door and gauged his chances of making it out in one piece. Well, there was no helping it. If he stayed hidden under the table, the authorities might eventually show up and take him away. They'd lock him up as an "instigator" - that's the term they always used, though it didn't seem quite fair. After all, it wasn't his fault that people often misconstrued the things that he said or did...
The authorities might be the least of his worries, Dorf reflected, if the bartender laid hands on him. The man was a veritable giant, and he had an unwholesome, crazy look about him. No, that was a confrontation which Dorf would just as well avoid.
Dorf gathered up his courage and prepared to make good his escape. He'd try to crawl as far as possible towards the door on his hands and knees. Who knew, crawling might even let him get a quick peek up some damsel's skirt (accidentally, of course)... If he made it to the exit he'd try to find his horse and get the heck out of town as quickly as possible. No sense in looking back, he thought.
He hoped that no one would get in his way. Dorf really didn't like fighting. If someone did hold him up, he'd try to extricate himself as gently as possible. I wouldn't be wise to give the authorities too much cause to lock him up, but if push came to shove, literally, he'd use the dagger which he had hidden up his sleeve, or the one in his boot, or perhaps the one sheathed safely in his belt. He'd hate to have to draw blood, and he certainly didn't want to kill anyone, but there was no way he was going to let that bartender catch him. Better somebody else's blood than his own...
Taking one last deep breath, Dorf began crawling for the doorway.
Some new players express a fear of getting themselves into trouble by Wyrming accidentally. While some moderators are more concerned about Wyrming than others, the general rule of thumb is, if you aren't manipulating events to give your character an advantage, you're alright. Mistakes happen from time to time, and your moderator understands this. If you’re guilty of an accidental Wyrm, your moderators will give you a friendly reminder explaining why you’ve Wyrmed. They might also require you to edit your post so that the thread can carry on appropriately. Don’t worry, you won't get your character in serious trouble unless your Wyrming is deliberate and repeated.
